Select Global - Carbon Credit Guide

“The World Bank confirms that the Global carbon Market was worth $142bn last year – 13 times its value six years earlier”
Source—The Financial Times September 2011

Select-Global - What is a Carbon Credit?

A permit that allows the holder to emit one tonne of carbon dioxide.
Credits are awarded to projects that have reduced green house gases or have produced clean energy that would normally have used fossil fuels and therefore produced greenhouse gases. Carbon credits can be traded on the international market. All voluntary credits must be verified by an independent organization such as the VERIFIED CARBON STANDARD.

Select-Global – Who Buys Carbon Credits?

Individuals and companies purchase carbon credits to reduce their carbon footprint. Once they have purchased a carbon credit, they retire it and therefore offset 1 tonne of carbon dioxide or equivalent gas that they have produced. Individuals may, for example, choose to do this to offset an aeroplane journey or any other activity that produces carbon emissions. Companies however may purchase voluntary carbon credits for many reasons;

 Corporate Social Responsibility including the commitment to become carbon neutral.
 Commercial necessity as many large companies now insist on their whole supply chain becoming carbon neutral.
 Reducing impact on global warming.
 Product positioning
 Differentiation from market competitors (or keeping up with market leaders)
 In anticipation of Mandatory Carbon Reporting
 Forming a greater understanding of the carbon risk associated with business operations and/or product manufacture
